Georgia Governor Leading Trade Mission to Cuba

Atlanta – 03.24.10

The state of Georgia is leading a trade mission to Cuba June 6-8 and is
inviting companies involved in agriculture, fishing, forestry, medicine
and telecommunications to go along.

Gov. Sonny Perdue plans to make the trip as well, his office confirmed
Wednesday.

Although the U.S. still has a trade embargo against Cuba, it has been
relaxed to allow exports of agricultural products, medicines, medical
equipment and telecommunications products, Mary Waters, international
trade manager for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, wrote
in a recent letter to Georgia exporters.

Last year, Georgia sold products worth $42.5 million to Cuba, mostly
agricultural commodities, the letter said. Georgia ranks sixth among
U.S. states in sales to Cuba, Ms. Waters wrote.

"And there is room for growth," she added. "This mission will allow you
to be well-positioned to take advantage of increased trade ties with Cuba."

Exporters who want to go on the trip have until March 31 to apply. For
more information, e-mail Ms. Waters here or call her at (404) 962-4128."
